The locks

Route 5 is a trip of approx. 130km and offers approx. 1800 vertical meters. Even though this is a good trip where you get both a lot of kilometers and altitude meters, this is a wonderfully beautiful and eventful trip along one of the things that Telemark is best known for, the Telemark Canal. And if you’re lucky, you can meet the canal boats Henrik Ibsen or Victoria when you get to Lunde and cycle up the Telemark Canal from Lunde to Kviteseid.

It is recommended that the GPS is set to select the fastest route and any avoidance turned off for the route to be calculated as described.

Starts as usual from Straand Hotel and takes you a short distance down along Nisser.
At Steane, turn left towards Grova and Drangedal.

Here you’ll have a small climb before tipping downwards.
After passing the summit, you’ll have what you might call a very easy transport stage down towards Grova, Tørdal and Bostrak before ending up in Drangedal.
This is a distance of approx.
40 km and approx.
70 meters in altitude.
In Drangedal, it’s a good idea to buy some food and drink for the trip over the hill to Lunde.
The hike from Drangedal to Lunde is a great hike in slightly hilly terrain with a small climb the last part up to the top before you get a good downhill run down to Strengen in Lunde.
When you get down to the crossroads at Strengen, you will see Kjeldal locks approx.
200 meters to the right.
Here you may be lucky enough to meet the canal boats Henrik Ibsen or Victoria as they pass through the locks.
The bike ride continues to the left towards Fjågesund.
The ride from Lunde and up towards Fjågesund and Vrådal is in the category of hilly terrain, but fun.
The tour ends with the well-known Kviteseidkleivene towards Vrådal and Straand Hotel.

How can I navigate the route?

This primarily depends on whether you have a GPS installed, navigate by App on your mobile phone or prefer paper printing.
Here we describe the most common workflows:

GPS via computer

Download the GPX file for the route of your choice to your computer
Import the file to your route planning tool (e.g. Garmin’s Basecamp or Tom Tom’s MyDrive)
Export the route to your GPS in the usual way
Check that the route is calculated correctly in your GPS (It is recommended that the GPS is set to select the fastest route and any avoidance is turned off for the route to be calculated as described).

GPS via mobile phone

Download the GPX file for the route of your choice to your mobile phone
Send/open the file in the app that belongs to your GPS model (e.g. Garmin’s Drive or Tom Tom’s MyDrive)
Send the route to your GPS (follow instructions that come with your GPS and App)
Check that the route is calculated correctly in your GPS (It is recommended that the GPS is set to select the fastest route and any avoidance is turned off for the route to be calculated as described).

Many of the routes on Hubriding use the app Ride with GPS app for route planning and navigation of the routes.
You can download a free version or pay for extended use.
Click on the Send to Device link on the map on this page, when the app has started and you see the current route, press Navigate and then just follow the route.
