The most important projects that generate the greatest interest are usually created when well-known and prominent personalities come together to collaborate on something. That’s what’s happening now, when Speed patron Terje Bredal, under the auspices of Speed Motorsenter in Sandefjord, is starting an adventure school together with one of Norway’s most prominent motorcycle profiles, journalist Kyrre Hagen, who has reported on tests and travel experiences in both MC-avisa and MC-avisa Bike for many years. Both can be described as giants who know all aspects of the Norwegian motorcycle industry and who themselves have a not insignificant amount of knowledge and experience from the adventure segment – in all forms really. These two guys possess a lot of knowledge and expertise that few others have, and can boast such a great willingness and ability to create skills and driving pleasure in other drivers. They have previously done this in their own way and with good results, but now they have finally decided to do something together that benefits us all. This is how the Adventure School was born and on Saturday, November 23, the event was formally opened with an open day at Speed.
Both Terje Bredal and Kyrre Hagen are professionals who represent and manage their knowledge and skills with great credibility, and the motorcyclists clearly like that. More than 100 people therefore filled the second floor of Speed, which had to hastily find more chairs and sound technology to reach everyone. They simply weren’t prepared for the level of interest this would generate.
During the winter months, most motorcyclists hibernate like bears, but some use the time to plan or realize dreams in parts of the world where you can still operate on two wheels. That’s exactly what Kyrre and Terje know a lot about, and the Adventure School will be just the vehicle motorcyclists need to get their asses in gear, learn a little about project management and how dreams can actually be realized. Not just in terms of plans, but also skills and, not least, motivation to follow through.
The curriculum for the Adventure School states:
The adventure school is an initiative initiated in collaboration between Speed Motorcenter AS and Kyrre Hagen, an experienced adventure driver and well-known motor journalist.
The goal of the Adventure School is to increase the joy of planning and implementing small and large adventure projects, raising knowledge and skills so that you avoid making mistakes others have already made. At the adventure school you will learn what you need to realize your dream, such as how to plan, prepare materials and equipment you can benefit from, a little about navigation, safety, driving techniques and a little about how to document your trip with photos or film. The Adventure School will help inspire participants to explore new destinations by lowering the threshold for going on an “adventure”. This will be achieved by improving both knowledge and skills among the participants.
Knowledge goals:
- Be able to evaluate destinations based on available information
- Know more about different destinations
- Increase your knowledge of what you need to take with you on a trip
- Navigation and equipment selection
- Be more prepared for the situations you may encounter when traveling
- Increase trip planning and navigation skills
Skill goals:
- Get better at riding a motorcycle on different surfaces
- Be able to assess a route and travel plans based on the conditions where you intend to travel
- Get better at downloading maps and planning routes
- Use appropriate navigation technology
- Plan the right equipment based on the type of trip
- Carry out daily inspections of the bike and emergency repairs.
Tools:
- Lectures on special topics.
- Presentations with experiences from planning to the journey itself.
- Course with driving skills training. Different steps/ surfaces.
- Written articles with various tips.
- Written articles from trips, preferably with preparations.
- Conduct tours.
The Adventure School will also ensure that participants make new contacts and create a community that they can benefit from in the future. Here, expertise will be gathered and exchanged in a pleasant environment.
The Adventure School’s resources are employees at Speed Motorsenter, Kyrre Hagen, as well as other resources that will be relevant to use based on themes and activities.
Two-way and interactive dialog
Terje and Kyrre took a fun approach by inviting the attendees to share what they understood by the term Adventure and what else they could expect from the Adventure School. This created an interesting and lively debate that drew the audience into discussions about future content and preferences. There will be more events like this this winter and next year, and if you want to keep track of everything that’s happening, you can use www.adventureskolen.no, which is currently under production and is expected to be available in a month’s time.
