Boating experience on the Telemark canal

This is a tour where fantastic driving experiences are combined with a great boat trip on the Telemark Canal. The tour starts after a delicious breakfast at Straand Hotel, first goes through beautiful forest terrain before parking to enjoy a great experience on the Telemark Canal. The motorcycle is parked at Ulefoss and the tour starts with a bus ride to Lunde and then takes the boat back to Ulefoss through the inner part of the canal. The trip ends with some of the best riding terrain we can offer, where the ride along Flåvatn and the finish up Kviteseidkleivene provide a great setting before the after-drive on the terrace.

Fantastic driving experiences combined with a great boat trip on the Telemark Canal. This tour is also recommended as a great experience on the way to or from Straand Hotel, if you want to combine this with a trip on the Telemark Canal.

The drive starts along Nisser to Steane, where you turn off towards Drangedal in hilly, winding forest terrain. In Bostrak, it is possible to stretch your legs and enjoy a visit to Sputnik at his museum there. From Drangedal, continue towards Kjelldal locks and Ulefoss where you can park your motorcycle (free of charge). From Ulefoss you take a bus to Lunde, where you board the canal boats on the Telemark Canal for an impressive voyage along Europe’s “eighth wonder” as the canal was called when it opened in 1892. It is recommended to have lunch on board the boat, alternatively lunch is recommended at Spiseriet Øvre Verket if it is too long to wait until you are on board. From Ulefoss, take the old Fjågesundvegen road along the Telemark Canal, which is one of our most popular fairground roads. At Kviteseid Old Church, which was built around 1260, the tour continues into the popular Kviteseid gorges, where the tour ends with steep, winding climbs and hairpin bends back to Straand Hotel. 12.35 departure by canal bus from Ulefoss locks bus stop

13.00 arrival Lunde lock. Approx. 200 meters to walk from the bus stop to the lock.

13.25 (or 13.45*) departure by canal boat from Lunde lock

15.20 (or 16.00*) arrival at Ulefoss locks

How can I navigate the route?

This primarily depends on whether you have a GPS installed, navigate by App on your mobile phone or prefer paper printing.
Here we describe the most common workflows:

  • Download the GPX file for the route of your choice to your computer
  • Import the file to your route planning tool (e.g. Garmin’s Basecamp or Tom Tom’s MyDrive)
  • Export the route to your GPS in the usual way
  • Check that the route is calculated correctly in your GPS (It is recommended that the GPS is set to select the fastest route and any avoidance is turned off for the route to be calculated as described).
  • Have a good trip!
  • Download the GPX file for the route of your choice to your mobile phone
  • Send/open the file in the app that belongs to your GPS model (e.g. Garmin’s Drive or Tom Tom’s MyDrive)
  • Send the route to your GPS (follow instructions that come with your GPS and App)
  • Check that the route is calculated correctly in your GPS (It is recommended that the GPS is set to select the fastest route and any avoidance is turned off for the route to be calculated as described).
  • Have a good trip!

The routes we offer go through some of Norway’s very best terrain and include tens of thousands of bends, spectacular mountain passes, asphalt, gravel, wonderful nature experiences and the opportunity to eat well at local establishments. We’ve included sights and eateries for you to visit in the routes.
You will be able to choose from a number of routes and route combinations that make it possible to choose daily stages of varying length and difficulty. The concept has been developed by Straand Hotel in Vrådal together with Norway’s leading motorcycle enthusiasts.
