The route is very varied from beautiful mountain roads on gravel via back roads up Ottadalen to dramatic turns down to Geiranger.
The 300 km stretch consists of about 55% asphalt and 45% gravel.
The tour starts from Nermo via the west side road to Tretten and further up to Skeikampen before entering the Peer Gynt road, one of Norway’s most beautiful mountain roads, to Gålå and Dalseter.
Continue along Espedalsveien for about 10 km to Skåbu and then west for another 10 km to Slangen.
The route then heads north along Sikkildalsvegen and then onto Nysetervegen before reaching Leirflaten in Heidal and Randsverk. From Randsverk you drive into Arne Brimi’s kingdom along Lake Tesse.
If you see a man in a rowing boat wearing a Bula hat and neckerchief, it’s probably Brimi himself, out foraging for food.
At the north end of Tesse, you’ll pass first Brimi Sæter and then Brimi Fjellstugu.
Both deserve a stop and at Brimi Sæter they produce one of Norway’s best mountain cheeses. Down on Riksvei 15 in Ottadalen again, follow R15 north for a couple of kilometers before following the old gravel road along Ottaelva north to Lom.
Here we recommend lunch at the lovely Fossheim Hotel. After lunch, you continue north towards Skjåk and Grotli via side roads through rich agricultural areas and beautiful cultural landscapes.
If you need a quick break and coffee stop, we highly recommend Billingen Seterpensjonat.
When you arrive at Grotli, take Gamle Geirangervegen, which runs parallel to Strynefjellsvegen along the Breiddalsvatnet lake to the exit down to Geiranger.
Then follow Geirangervegen down to Union.
You may want to drive up around Dalsnibba before heading down to Union Geiranger.
