Route 1

Fjord and mountains

This is the shortest trip, but the short length of the trip is in no way at the expense of fantastic nature and great experiences! The first 84 km are along the National Tourist Route, which is spectacular in itself.

The first 84 km run along the national tourist route, which is spectacular in itself. You start the trip by driving around the Esefjord with high mountains just above and close by.

After half an hour, the climb up Gaularfjellet to Utsikten at the top, where you must of course stop. Fifteen minutes later, you'll stop at Likholefossen, where you can walk over the roaring waterfall and really experience the forces of nature. On the way down from the mountains to Viksdalsvatnet and Sande, you'll experience even more spectacular scenery. Through Ytredalen to Vadheim you have high mountains on both sides and from Vadheim to Balestrand you drive along the Sognefjord in a completely new setting. On the way back, we recommend a stop in the industrial town of Høyanger. A wonderful trip that is rich in experiences and impressions.

How can I navigate the route?

This depends primarily on whether you have installed a GPS, navigate by App on your mobile phone or prefer paper printouts. Here we describe the most common workflows:

  • Download the GPX file for the route you want to your computer
  • Import the file to your route planning tool (e.g. Garmin's Basecamp or Tom Tom's MyDrive)
  • Export the route to your GPS in the usual way
  • Check that the route is calculated correctly in your GPS (It is recommended that the GPS is set to select the fastest route and any avoidance turned off for the route to be calculated as described).
