Route 4

Around Mellsjøen and Birken-land

This is a tour that takes you into Birken-land with the famous Rosinbakken. Be aware that there are a couple of stretches of trail that can be challenging. But don’t worry, there are easy detours on gravel roads in both places if you wish.

The tour starts at the large parking lot at Pellestova.
If you want to shorten the trip, you can drive 5-6 km further until you find parking spaces just before Reina.
This will shorten the trip by about 10-12 km.
From Reina, the trail runs in easy terrain towards Hornsjø and at the hotel you have to keep up.
The trail takes you onto a nice gravel road marked towards Hynna, which eventually turns into a fairly demanding 3.5 km trail to Hynna.
If you're not used to trail biking, you can follow the gravel road over and along the Åsta river before crossing the river again and returning to the route.
Perhaps this is where the group will split up for a while?

The prize for those who follow the route and the trail section is a fun trail in between and two pleasant stretches without traffic.
The trails separate at 14.5 km from the start and meet again at 19.5 km.
Once you’re back on the road, it climbs up to Storstilen and you’re on the Birken trail and the famous Rosinbakken.
This is where many people struggle with cramps and “hit the wall” in the Birkebeiner race, which runs between Rena and Lillehammer.
Once you’re up Rosinbakken, the terrain is slightly hilly above Elgåsen, where you leave the Birken trail and cycle along the beautiful Mellsjøen lake.
Here you’ll find great picnic and campfire spots in the ski paradise that is Sjusjøen.
Back at Reinsvannet, a new, shorter and slightly easier trail section awaits.
There’s also an easy detour via Reina for those who want to stay on a gravel road.
If you’re not too tired after your hike, you might be tempted to cycle down one of the trails in Hafjell Bike Park.
In that case, green trails 7 and 16 and blue trails 5, 12 and 14 are exciting options.
The way they are built means that they are challenging for everyone based on their own skill and speed.
In general, the mountain hikes from Nermo hotel can be used as a framework for several experiences.
They are mostly on gravel roads, but at the same time they go through some of Norway’s finest terrain for trail biking.
On our tours you’ll find everything from fantastic flow trails to more demanding trails for the experienced.
Check the web or signs along the way marked with bikes in the colors green (easiest), blue, red or the most demanding black.
