A NEW GENERATION OF SUPERSPORT: YAMAHA R9 2025

Over the past three decades, the Yamaha R Series has become synonymous with speed, performance and style.

The launch of a new ‘R’ model has always been a seminal moment for Yamaha, from the unveiling of the original R1 in 1998, followed by the R6 a year later alongside the iconic YZF-R7, to the revival of the entry-level market with the R125 in 2008. In 2015, MotoGP-level electronics were introduced to the Supersport segment with the R1 and R1M, and then the CP2-powered R7 added a whole new dimension to the Supersport market in 2021.
And now, for model year 2025, the time has come to redefine the Supersport category once again with the latest highly anticipated model in the legendary R-series; the R9.
Offering thrilling performance and the cutting-edge technology the R-series is known for, the R9 introduces a whole new generation of Supersport.
There’s no getting away from the fact that the Supersport market has changed over the years, with riders’ needs and desires constantly evolving, and with stricter emissions regulations. It’s this change that led Yamaha to the decision that their iconic R1 would become a track-only model from 2025 with the introduction of the R1 RACE and the continuation of the R1 GYTR. While the R1 GYTR and R1 RACE and their ultimate track performance remain the flagship models at the top of the Supersport range, Yamaha will continue to nurture the road legal Supersport market and the demand and enthusiasm for this market since the introduction of the R7 shows that there is still a place for road legal Supersport models. The introduction of the R9 completes the Supersport category, moving from the entry level R125 via the A2 category R3, the middleweight R7 to now the R9 for street bikes, while the always important R1 GYTR, R1 RACE, R6 GYTR and R6 RACE retain their place in the model range with their high-level performance exclusively for the track. Although this new generation of Supersport marks the beginning of a new chapter, the story remains the same with the Supersport series identity based on Yamaha’s racing DNA. From design elements to race-developed technology, each Supersport model is a product of Yamaha racing at the very highest level. The R9 takes this proven, race-derived technology and design and combines it with the critically acclaimed three-cylinder CP3 engine platform that has revolutionized the Yamaha brand over the past decade. The marriage of this renowned torquey engine and Yamaha’s renowned precise racing handling creates a perfectly balanced Supersport model worthy of its status as the R-series flagship. It offers efficient sports performance on the road and plenty of performance for the track. DESIGNED WITH R-DNA The introduction of every R Series model has always made a strong impression, and the R9 is no exception.
While the R9 retains many of the MotoGP-inspired design features that have become synonymous with Yamaha Supersport models, instantly identifying it as an ‘R’ machine, the design also represents the progression expected of a new generation.
Horizontal lines have been emphasized on all R models since the 2015 R1, but this aggressive and sporty style is taken to the next level for the R9, expanding from horizontal lines to more horizontal movement. It offers a powerful and fluid feel, embodying the R9’s agility, precise handling and racing-engineered innovation. This new look is encapsulated by the integrated aerodynamic winglets, which contribute to the R9’s rugged new design to complement its powerful performance.

The iconic R-Series ‘M’-shaped air duct and dual-eye headlights remain, but each of these design features has been accentuated to add next-generation aggressive styling. A single-lens headlight in the M-channel contributes to the icy look, while a central spoiler in front of the headlight works with the winglets, adding to the powerful aesthetic. HIGH TORQUE, 890CC CP3 ENGINE The R9 is powered by Yamaha’s award-winning 890cc CP3 liquid-cooled, three-cylinder, DOHC fuel injection engine with four valves per cylinder. The 78mm x 62mm bore and stroke and 11.5:1 compression ratio provide both excellent torque and plenty of power. Combined with the fine control offered by the Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T), you get optimum performance both on the track and on the road. The secondary gearing, ignition timing and fuel mapping are all optimized for Supersport performance both on the track and on the road.
The three-cylinder roar has become a trademark of the CP3 over the years, and Yamaha engineers paid considerable attention to amplifying the engine’s engaging sound. LIGHTWEIGHT ALUMINUM DELTABOX FRAME Developed specifically for the R9, the gravity-cast Deltabox frame has had its stiffness tuned for sports performance at both low and high loads.
Compared to Yamaha’s other CP3 models, the stiffness of the R9’s base frame is higher in all three directions: Torsional, Longitudinal and Lateral. By using specific thicknesses, shapes and even machined holes, Yamaha’s engineers aim to balance stiffness and flexibility and provide the rider with both good feedback and ride comfort. The frame’s stand-alone weight of 9.7 kg makes it the lightest frame ever used on a Yamaha Supersport model. This lightweight chassis means that the total ready-to-ride weight of the R9 is only 195 kg, resulting in the optimum power-to-weight ratio.
The frame, in combination with the rear frame, has been designed to contribute to the R9’s slim and nimble appearance, while emphasizing the speed and performance of a true Supersport machine. THE MOST AERODYNAMICALLY EFFICIENT YAMAHA MODEL TO DATE Given its size-to-performance ratio, the R6 has long been the most aerodynamic Yamaha model and this was the benchmark for Yamaha engineers to optimize the R9’s aerodynamic efficiency. Through extensive wind tunnel testing, engineers were able to design the R9 to have less aerodynamic drag (and thus maximize top speed and acceleration performance) than the R6, despite the R9 having a larger displacement, radiator and frontal surface area. This efficiency is achieved through a combination of the front cowl design, and the new aerodynamic winglets, added just below the lights. These reduce front lift and improve contact with the road. Normally, adding winglets would generate additional drag. Through repeated testing, the negative influences were eliminated and the final design minimizes drag while giving the driver the feeling of a stable front wheel.
The winglets reduce front wheel lift by 6-7% in a straight line, and when combined with the front spoiler under the M-channel, this effect is increased to approximately 10% in corners.

HANDLING AT SUPERSPORT LEVEL: FEATURE.

Yamaha’s Supersport machines are renowned for their sharp handling, and this remains true for the R9. The front and rear shocks are both newly developed KYB suspension components set up specifically for the model, and developed alongside the 2025 R1 GYTR and R1 RACE.
The new 43mm KYB inverted front forks have been completely redesigned and now feature individual adjustments for rebound and compression damping on the left and right fork legs. Each can be adjusted individually, with the right tube for rebound damping and the left for compression, both for high speed and for low speed. Each fork leg now has a base valve, designed to optimize the pressure in the cylinder by limiting or completely preventing oil from flowing into the bottom of the fork. This new setup results in improved damping response, enhanced contact feel and better all-round stability. And a Kashima coating darkens the gold/bronze color with true performance aesthetics. The rear shock absorber is adjustable for preload, rebound and compression damping. The new design contributes to highly precise damping, providing better feedback from the track or road surface. RACING-INSPIRED BREMBO BRAKE SYSTEM The R9 features racing-derived Brembo Stylema monoblock calipers, which are lightweight, stiff and designed to provide better control and stability. The stainless steel brake hoses and large 320 mm front discs provide excellent consistent and controllable feel, especially in prolonged use and under heavy braking.
Taking the R9’s stopping power to the next level, the Brembo radial master cylinder features a piston that moves parallel to the travel of the brake lever. It applies pressure in a linear fashion as the driver pulls the lever, resulting in a refined sense of control. The lightweight Stylema calipers produce their stopping power through four 30 mm pistons and are designed to allow optimized airflow for efficient cooling, preventing the brakes from losing power during hard track driving. SPORTY COMFORT: OPTIMIZED DRIVING POSITION True to its Supersport style, the R9’s driving position is designed to be sporty, with racing-style clip-on handlebars. To accommodate the different levels of track day riders, as well as spirited road rides, the points of contact between the motorcycle and the body have been developed to allow different riders to move freely around the bike.
The distance from the handlebars to the rider’s hips has been optimized to avoid an excessively forward-leaning riding position, and the 830 mm seat height provides accessibility for a wide range of riders. The footpegs are positioned to provide more space and avoid leg cramps. STEERING The handlebar is clip-on mounted under the triple clamp, providing the kind of front loading you’d expect from a Supersport without too aggressive a riding position. The position is sportier than the clip-on handlebars on the R7, but more relaxed than those on the R6 RACE, providing a wider range of use. FUEL TANK The 14-liter fuel tank provides ample range for on-road use, while remaining narrow for optimal rider-machine connection. The tank shape is designed to provide good grip for the operator’s thigh and arm when cornering, with the aim of providing a sense of stability and contact mid-corner.

SPORT-FOCUSED BRIDGESTONE TIRES

The R9 is equipped with Bridgestone’s Battlax Hypersport RS11s, with track-level performance tuned for use on public roads. These sports tires offer incredible performance thanks to their grip, cornering stability and contact feel. NEWLY DESIGNED CONTROL SWITCHES WITH A BRAND NEW USER INTERFACE The R9’s switchgear is both intuitive and easy to use, with a focus on minimizing the number of buttons to operate a wide range of functions. The shape and feel of the button during use has been thoroughly refined to provide optimal operation with gloves on. CRUISE CONTROL AND SPEED LIMITS For convenience when driving longer distances, the R9 is equipped with a cruise control system, which can be activated when driving at speeds from 40 km/h in third gear and higher. After the cruise speed is set, it can be increased or decreased in 1 km/h increments with simple presses of the switch, or continuously by holding down the switch. Cruise control can be canceled either by pressing a button, the brake, clutch or throttle control. Riders can also set a speed limit for their bike, which controls engine power to ensure the machine does not exceed the selected speed. Sophisticated R1-BASED ELECTRONICS AND YRC MODES The R9’s high-tech six-axis IMU is developed directly from the R1’s electronic systems, continuously measuring acceleration in the forward-backward, up-down and left-right directions – as well as lateral and tilt angular velocity.
The IMU is able to send real-time data to the ECU, which controls the suite of electronic rider aids and in turn alters the machine’s behavior depending on the level of support selected by the rider. INTEGRATED RIDING MODES Riders can customize their riding experience via Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) settings. This feature allows the rider to select engine power characteristics and the level of electronic support according to road conditions and their own preferences.
Three integrated riding modes, “Sport”, “Street” and “Rain” with factory settings with different levels to suit different conditions, are complemented by the ability to preset two custom modes and four Track modes. This makes it possible to create specific YRC settings to suit certain situations or conditions by changing the level of electronic support such as Power Delivery (PWR), Traction Control (TCS), Slide Control System (SCS), Brake Control (BC), Back Slip Regulator (BSR), Engine Brake Management (EBM) and Front Wheel Lift Control (LIF), all of which can be set directly through the R9’s YRC settings screen or via Yamaha’s MyRide smartphone app. For optimum race starts, the R9 also features a launch control system, which supports riders when starting and accelerating from a standstill.
And for track use, there is the option to turn off the rear ABS.

The system has two settings with setting 1 enabling upshifts on acceleration and downshifts on deceleration, while setting 2 also allows downshifts while accelerating and upshifts while braking, providing greater functionality in a wider range of scenarios. DISPLAY AND CONNECTIVITY The R9’s 5-inch TFT color display can be customized between four selectable themes, while a track mode displays information only relevant when driving on the track, including lap times. SMART PHONE ANSWERS AND DATA TRANSFER The R9’s instrument panel can be connected to a smartphone via Yamaha’s MyRide app through the motorcycle’s built-in Communications Control Unit (CCU). The app can be used to change YRC settings, allowing you to create new YRC modes even when you are away from the bike. Up to 40 different mode setting variants can be stored in the app to suit specific road or track conditions, and then uploaded to the bike when it’s in range. An integrated full navigation system is also available via the Garmin StreetCross app. And users can display various information and images on the screen, including phone calls, text messages and weather updates. Y-TRAC – FEEL LIKE A RACER! The Y-Trac app elevates the Supersport experience, allowing riders to improve their track driving and performance through tools usually only available to professional racers.
Derived from racing, the Y-Trac app gives you the ability to log and analyze driving data with professional-level technology regardless of the rider’s experience level – from beginners to pros. With the Y-Trac app, lap and sector times can be logged as well as machine data including lean angle, engine rpm, gear position, speed, throttle control and the support levels from the electronic support systems, such as traction control.
GPS location data can be via a rider’s smartphone, but if the rider wants to use a GPS device on the bike, Y-TRAC can be connected to the Garmin GLO2. Y-Trac also offers the option of a “Virtual Pitboard”, where the rider’s team of mechanics can send messages to the dashboard while out on the track.
