Route 3
The Golden Detour, about Fosen
Coastal roads with fantastic turns make this a popular ride, also for the local motorcyclist. The trip goes along the fjord almost all the way to Inderøy. You cruise further along fine roads in Trøndelag heaths and historic farmland. After a few miles along the E6, you drive along the fjord again with classic highway driving and gentle turns. Many miles are devoured on this trip, and it's worth every single one!
Do you want a longer ride on the motorcycle? Experience the Trøndelag hospitality with food experiences and cultural history you will soon forget. The Golden Detour is the name of the stretch of road that runs through beautiful Inderøy. Here you will find Trøndelag's food platters, famous historical sights and fantastic stretches of road.
The Golden Detour, about Fosen
The drive from Bårdshaug Herregård goes along the E39, either via the tunnels or along the sea, towards the roundabout on Klett. Here you turn left, and head out on county road 707 towards Flakk ferry berth. The ferry takes approx. 30 minutes and when you drive off you are at Fosen. You drive relatively flat along the fjord until you reach Leksvik, where then the road goes inwards towards heaths and hills, with a beautiful natural landscape along county road 755 to Mosvik. Mosvik is known for two things in particular; the birthplace of Petter Northug himself, one of Norway's most winning skiers of all time, and that this is where you start on one of the world's largest cable-stayed bridges, Skarnsundbrua. It looms well in the terrain and is a nice gateway to Inderøy, where you embark on the Golden Detour. The roads here are clear and the view shows that you are in the middle of a plate. Yellow cornfields, flower meadows and grasslands give off smells only the motorcyclist can feel.
The first stop is Kjerknesvågen quay for a leg stretch and maybe a bite to eat and a cup of coffee. Jekta Pauline, the world's last sailing yacht, is moored here and this coffee stop can be a long affair if you want to know more about boat building and restoration work.
Further towards Gangstadhaugen, the roads become narrower and somewhat worse. You drive along county road 229 and all the way over Inderøy you constantly meet possible exits to local farm shops, dairies and country stores.
When you reach the first junction, turn right on county road 761 towards Straumen, where you turn off again to county road 755. You drive it until you reach Røra. Here you turn right and you are now on the E6, in a southerly direction.
A short hour along nice roads on Norway's European road, you turn right towards Ekne. Follow the road further to the right again, in the direction of Ekne and Falstad and you are now on county road 61. On the fantastic road towards Frosta, we recommend a stop at Falstadsenteret, a prison camp from World War II turned into a museum. Well worth a visit.
A short half hour drive further you come to Frosta, a peninsula north of Trondheim, also known as «Trondheim's kitchen garden». From here, follow the signs to Tautra for a "must see" experience. This small important island in the middle of the Trondheim Fjord has a rich history. It is perhaps best known for the ruins of a medieval monastery, but it is also a well-known nature reserve. Here you can also enjoy short-distance food and drink, visit the farm shop and maybe a quick trip to the brewery?
The return trip is like a dream, with nice roads and dream turns along the fjord towards Åsen, where you then turn right at the petrol station and are on the E6 again. Now you just have to devour kilometer after kilometer with nice roads and beautiful views along the E6 until you reach the motorway at Stjørdal on to Klett. There you take the E39 and will soon be safely parked at Bårdshaug Herregård again. I wonder if it will be a juicy steak tonight?
How can I navigate the recommended routes?
This primarily depends on whether you have mounted a GPS, navigate by App on your mobile phone or prefer paper printing in the tank bag. Here we describe the most common workflows:
- Download the GPX file for the route you want to your computer
- Import the file into your route planning tool (Eg Garmin's Basecamp or Tom Tom's MyDrive)
- Export the route to your GPS as usual
- Check that the route calculates correctly in your GPS (It is recommended that GPS is set to select the fastest route and any avoidances turned off for the route to be calculated as described.)
- Good trip!
- Download the GPX file for the route you want to your mobile phone
- Send / open the file in the App that belongs to your GPS model (Eg Garmin's Drive or Tom Tom's MyDrive)
