Press release
For more than 15 years, the Norwegian travel agency “Indian Adventures” has organized motorcycle tours across the Himalayas. The most popular tour has been the “World’s Highest Motorcycle Tour” where one of the highlights, literally, is driving over the world’s highest pass. Until recently, this has been Khardung La, but has been overtaken by Umling La at 5799 m.
Umling La is located in the spectacular mountainous area in the east of the Ladakh region bordering China/Tibet. Until 2022, this area was only open to local Indians and military personnel. Now the authorities have opened it up so that civilians from outside can also experience the magnificent scenery and the pass that is half a kilometer higher than Mt. Everest Base Camp!
The village that will be the base for the trip up to the pass is called Hanle and is known for having one of the clearest and darkest night skies around. Here in the wilderness is the Indian Astronomical Observatory with the world’s second largest MACE telescope. This is the highest in the world and from here you can study the cosmos at an altitude of 4500 meters.
In addition to the world’s highest pass, the MC journey includes other highlights such as
including crossing 7 of thehighestpasses in the world, drivingthe Silk Road in the Nubra Valley between the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges, the desolate and unique Spiti Valley and the UNESCO World Heritage train journeyfrom Kalka to the Himalayan city of Shimla where the MC tour starts.
This is a motorcycle tour for those who wantsomething out of the ordinary. The road is ranked by several motorcycle magazines as the most spectacularroad in the world, including the renowned MCN.
